Program Overview

COURSE DESCRIPTION

  • This 5-day intensive programme provides comprehensive coverage of refractory engineering principles, materials, installation practices, and failure mechanisms specific to industrial & energy applications.
  • Participants will gain industry-relevant knowledge aligned with real operational challenges, supported by case studies and practical insights from experienced specialists.

CERTIFICATION AWARDED

This course also prepares delegates for certification exam:

  • TUV/IICS 1.6 Certified CHB Refractory Practitioner (Industrial & Energy Applications) with TUV NORD & IHRC Certification Framework

WHY IS THIS COURSE UNIQUE?

We will equip delegates with the necessary skills to assess the Risk Of Refractory Failure and to Examine Design Concepts.

  • Heat-Ups
  • Operation
  • Failures
  • Purchase Specifications
  • Raw Materials
  • Installations

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Understand the fundamentals of refractory materials used in refineries and petrochemical plants, including their types, properties, and applications in high-temperature industrial units.
  • Develop knowledge of refractory design, manufacturing, and installation methods, including bricks, monolithic materials, ceramic fibres, anchoring systems, and installation techniques.
  • Learn how to evaluate refractory performance and prevent failures, including understanding thermal behaviour, heat transfer, and common failure mechanisms such as spalling, sulphur attack, and abrasion.
  • Enhance skills in inspection, maintenance, and repair of refractory-lined equipment, particularly in critical refinery units such as FCCU, reformers, waste heat boilers, and incinerators.
  • Improve practical capability through case studies and hands-on demonstrations, enabling participants to assess risks of refractory failure and implement best practices in operation and maintenance.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The course is a necessity to people who have a responsibility for refractory installations, maintenance, inspections and who are involved in a production function. The latter will find the course of great value in understanding the relationship between refractories and process operations.

  • Maintenance Personnel
  • Engineers
  • Inspectors
  • Operators

OUR TRAINERS

  • Our trainer is a highly accomplished Subject Matter Expert with over 30 years of global experience in the refractory sector. As the Technical Director of CHB and Managing Director of Practical Refractories, he specializes in consultancy, inspection, and high-level technical training for the refining and petrochemical industries.
  • Our trainer is an API 982 certified refractory specialist with over 15 years of technical experience in the refinery and petrochemical industries. He specializes in FCCU inspections via drones and remote cameras, providing rapid repair solutions for cyclones and thin, erosion-resistant linings. His technical repertoire includes thermography interpretation, lining integrity assessments. John is proficient with a wide range of materials, including hexmesh, ceramic fibers, and chemical-resistant linings, and is currently aligning his expertise with ceramic ferrule performance and instrumentation for monitoring refractory linings.
